Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë

✮✮✮✮✮

Walked so every other bildungsroman with an English, brown-haired, bookish (or glasses-wearing) protagonist with magical powers could run (Harry Potter, Matilda, Molly Moon, etc.). In this case, Jane Eyre's magical ability is to be perceptive just enough to not be like other girls but not enough to pick up on any romantic cues... a Y/N. The prose is dense but worthwhile and I got so comfortable with the characters and settings that when the book ended I felt aimless. I don't think I will pick up another romance classic in a while because I want to preserve how special this book is to me.

*SPOILERS* The reunion of Jane and Rochester and the line "His port was still erect, his hair was still raven black; nor were his features altered or sunk…But in his countenance I saw a change. That looked desperate and brooding—that reminded me of some wronged and fettered wild beast or bird, dangerous to approach in his sullen woe." shattered my heart into pieces at 7 am in the morning in an outdoor cafe. I looked fucking crazy crying in public and in order to calm down I had to start skimming the last pages of the book so I wouldn't cry harder.
